You might be thinking, hey, I’ve got this one covered! I’ve survived lots of power outages. If that is your thought process, you could not be more wrong.

Anyone who considers, even for a moment, how interconnected and interdependent our existence has become … so full of overly-complex, over-engineered, over-automated systems driving every aspect of our increasingly fragile existence that is dependent on just-in-time inventory and shipping virtually everything we need ridiculous distances … arrives at the same inescapable conclusion: that mankind has built a house of cards.

I doubt we could have created a more fragile world if it had been our aim from the beginning. We have painted ourselves into a corner and we are going to make a mess getting out.

Few analogies are as simple and powerful as tripping an electrical breaker to disconnect a building from the grid. One moment the building is alive, bright, vibrant, buzzing. With the flip of a switch, it lays still, cold and dead.

On/off.

Alive/Dead.

It is truly that simple. One moment we have juice, the next we don’t.

The Chain Reaction

America’s need for power outstrips our investment in our capability to produce it by 400%.

Yet the legislative branch of government points fingers and the executive branch (well, what used to be the executive branch before we turned the zoo over to the chimps, so to speak) sits in its tower considering “jobs for jihadis” and throwing lavish parties to congratulate and reward itself for scamming the rest of us out of our tax dollars.

Meanwhile, our electrical infrastructure continues its rapid decay and the nation’s power grid slips and slides down a spiral water slide of demise. It appears that they could not possibly care less. Perhaps they figure somebody else will be in office to take the blame when the music stops.

But it is not just the US. The US economy affects the world economy and the world economy is feeling the pinch. You do not have to be a risk assessment genius to understand that a depressed world economy translates to more frequent power outages of increased duration and a weaker and more vulnerable power grid.

The grid is limping along on borrowed time. Through a combination of luck and the best efforts of the intelligence and military communities, we have dodged the CME/HEMP (Coronal Mass Ejection/High-altitude Electromagnetic Pulse) bullet … so far.

But while clock counts down to the next time the sun lobs an X-class solar flare in the general direction of our planet, the power industry has succeeded in using junk science generated by NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) to pull the wool over the eyes of congress and emergency management bureaucrats alike, forestalling the Shield Act, which is our only hope to harden the grid against the inevitable threat of EMP, be it geomagnetic or manmade.

The 2012 India Blackout affected 620 million people or 9% of the world population. India’s engineers blamed in on a number of factors that were merely symptoms of the same illness that affects the US and most other power grids.

The chronic illness underlying the symptoms was that the industrial and technological revolutions have catalyzed humanity’s explosive growth for far too long.

This has woven fragility into very fabric of world’s power grids. This has become a growth bubble of epic proportions searching for a pin. Our sun and geopolitical climate has that bubble navigating terrain akin to the Sonoran Desert. In reality, it is not so much a desert, but a forest of cactus spines, fangs, thorns and stingers, all poised to plant themselves in passersby.

I am involved in emergency management and I am very blessed to have many good, competent government emergency managers all the way up to the state level. After that, it mostly government shills who fancy themselves emergency managers.

Especially at the Federal level, the US has fallen prey to a culture of academics who pretend to know inordinately more than they actually do. Rooted firmly in the personality ethic, “Fake it ‘til you make it.” is their motto, but they never do. Afraid of their own intellectual shadow, they fear embracing and admitting their own uncertainly, which is the first step to anyone truly learning anything. So they believe what is most convenient as opposed to what is true. In this case, it very convenient to have blind faith that the electrical grid, like everything else in their lives, is maintained by people and organizations more intelligent, wiser, more benevolent and more responsible than they are. “Move along, nothing to see here!”

EMP is the stuff of Hollywood, not what our smartest scientists, the head of the CIA, and our best and brightest minds, and those of our enemies, seem to all agree is presently our single greatest known vulnerability.

Major vulnerabilities mean increased work load for emergency managers, and government shills resist having to actually provide a valuable service in trade for their salary.

Just this type of human debris, “working” for the City of Phoenix, Arizona concluded some years ago that an evacuation of Phoenix-Metro area is simply impossible.

So no such plan even exists. “Can’t win … don’t try.” They look to Homer Simpson for guidance on important issues like emergency plans that affect the lives of millions of people, including themselves and their own families.

I sincerely hope they have since remedied the situation, but I was not going to hold my breath and relocated to someplace with better prospects and better leadership.

The Countdown to Disaster

In order to understand how to prepare for a protracted power outage, you should understand the sequence of events that will unfold after the lights go out.

The electrical grid varies greatly from state to state and country to country, as do the threats to the grid, but here’s a sample of past events and future projections in form of a timeline.

It is a simple matter to put together a plan based on your family or organizational needs once you have an idea of what you’re preparing for so visualizing your mission and obstacles is sometimes more useful than the usual list of stuff you need have on hand and obligatory reminder to practice and train.

Immediately:

  • Electric heating & cooling systems fail. In winter, homes will begin losing heat. In summer, many buildings dependent on air conditioning to maintain a safe temperature for occupants will be forced to evacuate.
  • Many hospitals, radio stations, TV stations, telecomm systems and data centers switch over to emergency power but many lose air conditioning due to the expense of backup generators capable of supplying its heavy electrical load. Consequently, many data centers begin to heat up.
  • Computers without uninterruptable power supplies or an integrated battery power lose power.
  • Tall buildings reliant on most types of booster pumps lose water pressure past the bottom floors. Buildings with rooftop tanks have water until the tanks run dry.
  • Entire cities lose water pressure forcing boil-water advisories into effect for any water that does make to you or that you manage to scrounge up. But without electricity, most households will be unable to boil water. The NE US Blackout of 2003 left millions of Michigan residents without any water.
  • Many commuters are trapped on subways. Most electric subways and electric trains cease to function. Those that remain functioning reduce numbers of trains. In the Southern Brazil blackout of 1999, 60,000 commuters where on the subway system in Rio alone when it plunged into darkness. That blackout affected nearly 100 million people and triggered troop deployments. It was caused by neglect of the country’s grid due to a depressed economy. The event was triggered by an everyday lightning strike. Likewise, the NE US Blackout of 2003, affected all Northern states from Michigan up to NY and portions of Canada. Some 600 trains were stranded and thousands upon thousands had to be evacuated or rescued from subways and elevators.
  • Most traffic lights go dark or default to 4-way stops. Traffic snarls due to failure of traffic controls. Increased numbers of traffic accidents and delayed emergency response times.
  • Slowed traffic and calls to rescue thousands of people in elevators slows emergency response times.
  • Most credit card terminals and point of sale terminals are inoperable, limiting commerce. Some transactions continue on a cash only basis.
  • Most banks and ATMs (Automated Teller Machine) close or are inoperable, impeding most cash withdrawals.
  • In large blackouts, cell service typically goes down before land lines, large due to increased call volume and lack of power to form many cell towers to transmit, but keep in mind that voice, and text messaging operate on completely different frequencies and systems. Text messaging often works when voice does not. Also keep in mind that the landline system operates independent of cell service is more robust.
  • The 2012 India blackout shutdown multiple airports.
  • Refilling prescription medication instantly gets a whole lot harder. Refilling controlled medications becomes next to impossible for most patients.

4 hours:

  • Backup batteries on most alarm systems fail. If you own a brick and mortar small business, you either have to physically guard it or leave it vulnerable. If you own both a business and a home and commute between the two, you will have a hard time guarding them both. Many criminals are well aware of this fact and that law enforcement response times are slowing. Burglaries increase.
  • Small portable generators need to be refueled. This will become a constant chore, very expensive and noisy security risk, so you are better off putting in a renewable energy source and battery bank while it is still possible or planning to only run your generator at certain times and doing all chores requiring electricity while it is running.
  • Store shelves of business still in operation begin to empty.
  • Price gouging, profiteering, panic buying and hording cause panic to mount, tempers to flare. Batteries, bottled water, flashlights, ice, candles and fuel are hardest hit and profiteers begin selling them in the streets.
  • If cell phones or social media are still up, heavily-populated areas will see some flash mob-related crime.
  • Any previously working phone circuits will likely be overloaded by now.

6 hours:

  • Long lines form at gas stations still able to pump gas with battery-powered pumps or hand pumps as increasing numbers of motorists run out of fuel and many gas stations lose access to underground fuel tanks. They will only be able to accept cash.
  • GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) and FRS (Family Radio Service) radios rendered ineffective by “bubble pack” radio users and children. They will remain unusable from this point forward in most cities and suburbs. Smaller towns with redundant band plans will fare better, but will not be without major problems.
  • Most folk will have had to “use the bathroom” by now. Many will discover that their toilets no longer flush. Are you prepared for this eventuality?
  • By this point, if are well prepared, you will very likely have determined the scope of the outage, its probable duration and cause. You will most likely determine this via your emergency radio equipment such as AM/FM/SW emergency radios, scanners or amateur radio equipment. Depending on the scope and cause, you might have found out or figured out whether the blackout is due to grid failure, a geomagnetic event or an HEMP almost immediately. Understanding its probable scope and severity, however, may take some time and the use of your noggin, your ears and possibly asking the right people the right questions if you have ensured your ability to do ahead of time. Emergency responders and knowledgeable amateur radio enthusiasts, especially those who are part of ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) will have a huge advantage over the average citizen when it comes to collecting and correctly interpreting intelligence about the emergency. If neither of these is your cup of tea, you might consider networking with someone so inclined ahead of time or you may find yourself doubly in the dark.

8 Hours:

  • Utility companies set up generators to keep coms infrastructure up.
  • People realize this is not just a minor blackouts where they will light some candles and play break out a board game for the kids.
  • Small scale looting begins if hasn’t already. What happened, the ability of emergency services to inform the public, what they choose to tell people or the people having to figure it out themselves, may all have a significant impact on crime.

12 Hours:

  • By the end of the first business day, blackouts cost gas stations and restaurants as much as $20K a day. Grocery store? Try more like 60K per day.
  • Most refrigerators are now useless under normal usage patterns so most insulin-dependent diabetics lose the means to cool insulin.

Night fall:

  • CPAP and oxygen concentrator users who have not invested in an alternative power solution will wake up fatigued at best and run the risk of not waking up at all.
  • Crime rate goes up when the sun goes down.

Day 2:

  • State of Emergency Declared. Troop deployments likely, if available. The Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006, passed in 2007 specifically prohibits government officials from confiscating firearms in the aftermath of certain emergencies and natural disasters. Anyone who lies, cheats and steals their way into power these days seems to interpret the Constitution and Bill of Rights so broadly as to not apply to them or interprets one wiretap warrant to apply to hundreds of thousands of people. One such crook, former New Orleans police chief Eddie Compass, ordered police and National Guard units to confiscate firearms in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. To prevent this from happening again, The People passed a law specifying penalties should some future tyrant try it and manage to survive long enough to stand trial. This is very probable in Eastern US or the People’s Republic of Kalifornia, but I imagine anyone who tried that in most Western states would end up at the long end of a short rope shortly after the words exited his pie hole. So, will there be firearms confiscation? Probably not unless a state of martial law is declared, and then only in areas firmly under government control. But depending on how that administration uses that power, it might precipitate a premature “leadership vacuum. “
  • Fuel rationing begins. Trucks start pumping out gas stations and truck the fuel to priority skeleton infrastructure.
  • Freezers begin to thaw. Many people begin cooking thawing meat to preserve it or at least prepare it before it spoils. BBQ’s use far more propane to cook than camp stoves.
  • Do yourself a favor plan involves a bug out and clean out your fridge before you leave. If you come back, you will wish you had. If you come back to warm fridge after an extended absence, don’t bother opening it. Just tape it shut, haul it to the dump and buy a new one. You’ll save yourself a lot of grief.
  • Casualties and fatalities due to heat or cold exposure increase.
  • Casualties and fatalities due to lack of access to healthcare and medication increase.
  • Stores are likely cleaned out or soon will be.
  • By this time, lacking passive solar design features, alternative energy sources, wood stove, kerosene heater or the like, your home will likely be getting pretty close to the same temperature indoors as out of doors minus the wind chill. In some climates, this is no big deal. In other climates this is a death sentence. Plan accordingly. You will need a whole lot more clothing than in a climate-controlled home. If it is cold, create a micro-climate in a single room or fewer rooms. It will be way easier to keep one room warm than a whole house. If you have vaulted ceilings throughout your entire home, set up a cabin tent in the living room and line it’s walls and roof with reflective blankets.

Day 3:

  • 72 Hour Kits or typical bug out bags are used up or close to it. The average “prepared” citizen (as per FEMA’s over-optimistic recommendations based on past averages minus hurricanes, tornados and any other serious event because it is impossible that anything like that will ever happen again) runs out of emergency supplies and fuel to boil water.
  • As fatigue, injuries and concern for their families takes a toll on first responders, law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs (Emergency Medical Technician), nurses and doctors begin to stop showing up for shifts.
  • Rise in violent crime.
  • Looting picks up momentum.
  • Cases of waterborne and hygiene-related illness start to mount, further straining medical resources.
  • Some better-organized cities set up mobile morgues in refrigerated reefer trucks. It might sound a little morbid, but it is a whole lot better than the alternative.

Day 4:

  • Exhausted first responders and emergency personnel, nursing home staff and others have to prioritize dwindling resources where they can do the most good for patients with the best chances of recovery or survival.
  • Once you start using your food stores, the type or types of food you chose will have a huge impact on the amount of fuel needed to prepare it. Soaking dry packed legumes and grains prior to boiling can help reduce fuel consumption, but it takes a lot more fuel to cook from scratch than it does to prepare a freeze dried meal or heat up an MRE (Meal Ready-to-Eat).
  • By this time, cash may be have substantially less purchasing power and barter, mostly in the form of food, will eventually replace it.

Day 5:

  • Hospitals are forced to consolidate. Smaller hospitals and urgent care facilities are forced to shut down and must be evacuated, causing healthcare workers or volunteers to face difficult choices and patients to suffer the consequences.
  • Looting starts to die down because there isn’t anything left to loot.

Day 6:

  • As reality sets in, doctors do the unthinkable and begin euthanizing patients they feel have low probability of survival. As demonstrated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, this is considered acceptable practice and they will face no legal recourse if the blackout ends and society recovers. Due to limited quantities of medicine, no access to computerized medical records, lack of familiarity with the patients and lack of experience performing euthanasia, many of these attempts will fail, resulting in prolonged suffering, asphyxiation and hypoxic brain injury of patients who survive the attempt(s). This is sometimes due to the fact that patients with genetic tolerance to opioids and chronic pain patients undergoing opioid pain therapy will survive dosages far greater than a typically lethal dose.
  • Some elderly patients in nursing homes were simply abandoned and left to die of dehydration and exposure during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. If you have loved ones in such a facility, you might want to keep this in mind.

Day 7:

  • Cholera outbreaks and other serious fecal contamination-related and waterborne illness not seen in the US for decades or centuries begin to ravage cities, especially the large, coastal cities on the East Coast located far downstream from large populations. A protracted power outage will churn out epidemics, so it is prudent to plan for the eventuality.
  • Unleaded and diesel-only generator owners who can still find fuel available are feeling the pinch as gasoline is many times more expensive and less available than natural gas in the majority of outages. Propane is cheaper than gas, but usually less available unless you have large capacity tanks.
  • Some people that had been getting by looting businesses decide to give homes a try. Some see that the empty homes will soon run out and decide to transition straight to home invasion of occupied homes.
  • If martial law has not been declared yet, they may give it a shot, but this would depend on the scope of the outage, prospects for recovery, political motives, geography, etc.
  • If the power is still out and there isn’t a firm projection of restoration, you will likely be needing body bags soon if you have not already. Bodies can become a very serious microbiological threat and need to be properly handled and disposed of.

The Main Component To Survival That Everyone Needs To Consider: Stockpiling Food Might Be Your Best Investment When The SHTF

The small percentage of the population that keeps extra supplies on hand in the event of a disaster have taken the necessary steps to insure their family will not suffer as most others will following an event. This is the act of intelligent people that realize we live in a dangerous world with many unknowns.

It does not matter if you are prepared for two weeks, two months or two years of societal disruptions. At some point, if the event goes on long enough, you will eventually come to the end of your supplies. When that happens, what will you do?

Having a two year store of supplies is exceptional but as we have seen, some disasters can last far beyond that. The food scarcity we see in places like Venezuela have taken years to unfold and some past wars have raged on for more than a few years. When that happens even your best efforts may fall short and leave you in want.

Those that store a certain amount of supplies for a set period of time need to think beyond that period of time and imagine what they will do when the disaster lasts longer than they had planned on.

When you plan for an event, you need to think of the worst possible scenario and have a plan to handle it. A worst possible case may entail more supplies than you have the ability to buy or store but you should consider what your actions will be if you find yourself in that situation. Thinking about it now while you have the time to find solutions and determine a course of action will help you to stay calm and prevent you from making mistakes that might harm you later.

When an event happens, your greatest asset is your own mind. You need to program it with all of the answers you will need to get you through difficult times when they appear. This is the most basic level of preparing for difficult times that you can do.

Once you think through the possible troubles you may have in the future you will hopefully have answers at the ready when they are needed. Once you do this you will also be able to come up with a list of specific items that can help you the most if you get in that situation.

It may be tools, seeds, relocation sites or friends you can turn to that will make all the difference when the time comes. It costs you nothing but your time to sit down and think about these things now so there is no reason for you not to do it. When you are in need or in danger it is the little things that can make all of the difference.

Having supplies to care for your family buys you time and peace of mind when something happens. This time allows you to assess the situation and determine what your next move needs to be. It is impossible to plan for all of the potential unknowns you could be faced with which is why you need the time to adjust your plans and determine a course of action.

What works for one person may not be possible for someone else because people and situations are so vastly different. That is why you need to determine what will work for you and have a plan that you can follow. Looking at the plans of others can give you some good ideas but simply taking the plans of someone else and depending on that with no adjustments can be disastrous. You do not want to put yourself in a situation that is outside of your knowledge base.

When the world suddenly changes overnight you need to be ready to adjust to it. You need the resources to buy you the time to adjust and a plan that allows you the ability to survive and prosper long term

Major cities may still only take up a small portion of the land mass in the United States, but they are nevertheless home to over 80% of the population. With this being the case, the odds of being caught in the concrete jungle when disaster strikes are quite high.

Of course, the survival skills necessary to navigate a city during a disaster – whether it’s a major disaster such as a foreign attack or a personal disaster such as a robbery – are quite different from the skills many preppers may be accustomed to.

1. Lockpicking

The trademark of big cities is lots of buildings, and lots of buildings means lots of locks. In normal circumstances, these locks may be an afterthought. However, in a disaster scenario, being able to get past them could mean the difference between life and death.

Brush up on your lockpicking skills and invest in a good, portable lockpicking kit. In the right situation, these things could prove incredibly valuable.

2. Blending In

How do you hide in a place where there are thousands if not millions of eyes everywhere you turn? The answer is that you hide in plain sight. The art of blending in is one that is really underappreciated, however, in an urban area it is often the best way to ensure you are not the target of whatever catastrophe is taking place.

Martial law officials, foreign invaders, desperate scavengers, and more are all more likely to target someone who catches their attention for any reason at all. In these scenarios, it’s best to be just another indistinguishable face in the crowd.

3. Self-Defense

If you don’t intend to carry a weapon on you during your visit to the city, it’s a great idea to have a few self-defense skills that you can rely on. Of course, in the vein of blending in, physical confrontations should be avoided if at all possible. If you do have to defend yourself, though – for whatever reason – you need to make sure that you have what it takes to come out on top.

4. Scavenging

One great thing about urban areas is that there is no shortage of materials and supplies available if you know where to look and you have an eye for making use of the unordinary. Scavenging is more of a mindset than it is a skill that is taught.

You just need to keep your eyes open and develop a bit of creative talent for repurposing what you find into something useful.

5. Situational Awareness

When you’re surrounded by people, there’s often a lot to take in and process. This is especially true in hectic situations such as after a disaster. With that said, developing an acute situational awareness and the ability to quickly take in everything going on around you is one of the best ways to ensure your survival in an urban area.

This starts with really tuning in your focus to your surroundings and trusting your instincts above all else. In many cases, this type of situational awareness can help you escape dangerous situations before they ever develop.

6. Navigation

Too many people are completely reliant on their GPS when it comes to navigating an urban area. However, if those GPSs ever stop working, there are going to be a lot of people who are lost and in trouble. To avoid being one of them, take the time to learn the area you are visiting and get comfortable with the idea of navigating it without any technological aid.

Buy a map that you can bring with you and memorize a few escape routes just in case you lose it. If things go south, these navigation skills could be the difference between getting out quickly and getting caught wandering around a maze of concrete and steel.

7. Escaping a Riot

The middle of a major riot in an urban area is not a place you want to be under any circumstance. Just think back to the LA riots for an example of how dangerous these riots can become and how quickly they can spiral out of control. Of course, escaping a riot isn’t nearly as simple as walking away. If it were, there would be far fewer innocent bystanders who died in the chaos.

Before you visit a major city, take the time to research the best way to escape a riot in case you are caught up in one. There’s a lot of great information out there about this designed to help you get out of the middle of a riot as quickly as possible.

8. Communication Skills

Urban areas mean lots of people, and knowing how to deal with people when necessary is an important survival skill. If you can develop a knack for communicating with people, talking them down from violent situations, and reading their intentions based on what they do and say, you’ll have a much easier time navigating the often complex and sometimes dangerous human interactions that take place after a disaster has struck.

9. Driving

If you think driving through a big city under normal circumstances is a nightmare, imagine what it would be like to drive through one during or immediately after a major disaster. Of course, many times driving anywhere in these scenarios won’t be a possibility; in a situation where everyone is trying to get out, traffic jams can quickly shut the entire road system in the city down.

However, if you get out early enough or if there’s been time for the dust to settle, you may be able to effectively escape the city via your vehicle – assuming of course that you have the driving skills necessary to navigate a major city during heavy traffic congestion and highly stressful situations. It’s certainly no easy feat but, like anything else, it can be learned. By the way, make sure you have a good vehicle.

PART ONE

Technocrats say they want to wipe out poverty, war, and inequality. But in order to achieve these lofty goals (or pretend to), they need to re-program humans

Technocracy is the basic agenda and plan for ruling global society from above, so we need to understand it from several angles.

Consider a group of enthusiastic forward-looking engineers in the early 20th century. They work for a company that has a contract to manufacture a locomotive.

This is a highly complex piece of equipment.

On one level, workers are required to make the components to spec. Then they must put them all together. These tasks are formidable.

On another level, various departments of the company must coordinate their efforts. This is also viewed as a technological job. Organizing is considered a technology.

When the locomotive is finished and delivered, and when it runs on its tracks and pulls a train, a great and inspiring victory is won.

And then…the engineers begin to think about the implications. Suppose the locomotive was society itself? Suppose society was the finished product? Couldn’t society be put together in a coordinated fashion? And couldn’t the “technology of organizing things” be utilized for the job?

Why bother with endlessly arguing and lying politicians? Why should they be in charge? Isn’t that an obvious losing proposition? Of course it is.

Engineers could lay out and build a future society that would benefit all people. Disease and poverty could be wiped out. Eliminating them would be part of the blueprint.

This “insight” hit engineers and technicians like a ton of bricks. Of course! All societies had been failures for the same reason: the wrong people were in charge.

Armed with this new understanding, engineers of every stripe began to see what was needed. A revolution in thinking about societal organization. Science was the new king. And science would rule.

Of course, for an engineered world to work, certain decisions would have to be made about the role of the individual. Every individual. You couldn’t have an air-tight plan if every human were free to pursue his own objectives. Too many variables. Too much confusion. Too much conflict. Well, that problem could be solved. The individual’s actions would be tailored to fit the coordinated operations of the planned society.

The individual would be “one of the components of the locomotive.” His life would be connected to other lives to produce an exemplary shape.

Yes, this could imply a few problems, but those problems could be worked out. They would have to be worked out, because the overriding goal was the forming of a world organization. What would you do if one bolt (an individual human) in one wheel of a locomotive was the wrong size? You would go back and correct the error. You would re-make the bolt.

Other people entered the game. High-echelon Globalists saw technocracy as a system they could use to control the population.

Essentially, an already-misguided vision of a future technocratic utopia was hijacked. Something bad was made much worse.

In a nutshell, this is the history of technocracy.

A locomotive is a society? No. That was the first fatally flawed idea. Everything that followed was increasingly bizarre.

Unfortunately, many people in our world believe in Globalism, if you could call a partial vague view a legitimate belief. They dreamily float on all the propaganda cover stories—greatest good for the greatest number of people; no more poverty; equality of sharing; reducing the carbon footprint; a green economy; “sustainable development”; international cooperation; allotting production and consumption of goods and services for the betterment of everyone; and all of this delivered from a central platform of altruistic guidance.

If you track down the specifics that sit under these cover stories, you discover a warped system of planning that expresses control over the global population.

The collective utopia turns out to be a sham.

Waking up is hard to do? Breaking up is hard to do? They must be done.

A workable technological fix is a very nice achievement when the project is a machine. But transferring that glow of victory to the whole of society is an illusion. Anything that calls itself education would tackle the illusion as the first order of business.

Engineering society requires engineering humans.

That is the fatal flaw.

It’s called mind control.

PART TWO

Any genuine artist, any builder of communities, any sane activist, any honorable visionary stands outside technocracy, and is not part of this program.

Instead, his thrust is toward more individual freedom and a more open society with greater decentralization of power.

Decentralization is the key.

The use of technology does not imply living inside its control. The use of technology does not imply that society should be laid out like a giant machine with fitted parts.

Those futurists who have offered “overall plans” for the disposition of society generally ignore or sidestep the issue of who is going to administer the plan. To say this is an error is a vast understatement.

Where is one far-reaching center of power in our world that would run society?

All such centers of power are, first and foremost, dedicated to their own survival. And after that, they are dedicated to control of the territory they believe they own. THE INDIVIDUAL is a messy thing that needs to be sidelined or dealt with as a disruptive element.

I speak to those people who understand that the idea of the free, independent, powerful, and creative individual is being sidelined, shelved, and sent down the memory hole. This is no accident. This isn’t just a devolutionary trend. Technocrats see this as a necessary action, in order to “clean up” their equation for the civilization they’re building. The individual is a slippery variable that throws a monkey wrench into formulas.

PART THREE

Imagination never dies.

It belongs to the individual. It isn’t property of the group.

It enables solutions that eradicate problems and get out ahead of problems before they raise their heads.

Time and time again, the individual, as he wends his way through life, encounters persons and organizations that consider imagination a negative. In the clearly defined shapes of society, imagination must take a back seat to planning.

Is the individual resistant to such manipulations, or does he give in?

This is the key question.

Does the individual view society as an operation that can potentially lift up individuals and empower them? Or does he give in to the idea that society should create more and more dependent people?

The individual can be a source of spreading freedom, or he can defend the notion that there are an endless number of “entitlements” that must be honored.

Technocracy promotes entitlements as a doorway into the future. Its ultimate entitlement goes this way: you have the right to be re-programmed to believe you have a slot in the future world; we will make this slot as attractive as possible; you will serve the overall good as we engineer it.

That is the fundamental justification for the Welfare State. It’s the justification for a future technocratic policy which will assign citizens energy quotas. A citizen would be permitted to consume a set amount of energy in a given time period. (So-called smart meters are a step in that direction. The meters enable more specific measurements of energy consumption.)

This is how technocracy views the future…your future.

The ultimate technocratic vision? Your brain is a processor, and your brain is your mind. That’s all your mind is. Therefore, connecting your brain to a super-computer, or to the Cloud, will magically expand your mind and make it “more than human.”

You will become trans-human. A hybrid of human and machine.

This is the fairy tale to end all fairy tales.

It’s wishful fantasy dressed up as science.

The idea is: you will become More. You will overcome the limits and problems associated with being an individual.

Every individual will receive the same information and the same answers and the same solutions from the Cloud. AUTOMATICALLY.

This is the programmer’s wet dream.

Technocrats will thus be able to build a global society and control its every facet.

That’s the revolution.

The counter-revolution is YOU.

The free individual.

How GMO Food Kills Us – the vast majority of Americans eat genetically modified foods on a daily basis

Let’s begin today’s article with defining the term GMO.

GMO stands for genetically modified organism, whether we’re talking about an animal (yes, there are GMO animals, and the Chinese are already experimenting with gene editing in babies), a plant, a microorganism or whatever thing that contains DNA which can be modified by transgenic technology and/or genetic engineering.

This artificial genetic modification creates something completely new, a combo of animal, plant, bacterial and virus genes, a completely new organism that did not occur in nature, or via traditional methods, like crossbreeding.

Also, you must know that a lot of products you’re consuming daily contain GMO. For example, over 90% of soy (or corn) is GMO, and soy and corn byproducts can be found in almost every processed food.

Let Me Tell You a Fact You Probably Don’t Know

Just like with the so called scientific consensus about global warming, science is settled and all that nonsense, the scientific consensus in regard to GMO is an artificial construct that has been falsely perpetuated. That’s an actual quote[1] from a statement signed by many physicians, scientists and scholars back in 2015.

Another inconvenient fact is that to date, there’s no epidemiological study (long term that is) aimed at investigating the potential harmful effects of GMO on human health. The vast majority of the research which deemed GMO foods to be kosher has been sponsored by biotech companies, which is the definition of conflict of interest.

According to a peer reviewed study[2] about GMO animal feedings, to put it simply, when it comes to food safety and GMO, the science is still out. Also, as a side note, you should remember that science is never settled. Anybody that’s telling you otherwise is lying and/or has an occult agenda.

Another interesting read is this overview[3] which sums up almost all available (as in public domain) research on genetically modified organisms. What you must remember is that almost all animal feeding studies were performed by biotech (read Monsanto, Bayer or whatever) or their associates[4].

Let’s Take a Closer Look at GMO Plants.

Genetically modified plants are designed to resist the direct application of herbicides (read Roundup), or to produce themselves an insecticide. Basically, all GMO crops have been genetically manipulated to be tolerant or resistant to (patented) herbicide glyphosate chemicals (like Roundup), produced by companies like Monsanto. Also, GMO seeds (also patented) are designed to resist specific insects.

The herbicide-tolerant seeds use an enzyme derived from Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a soil bacterium that is, which confers them glyphosate resistance. Insect resistance derives from toxin genes borrowed from Bacillus thuringiensis, another soil bacterium.

Speaking of glyphosate, Roundup is the most used herbicide in the world, and it’s a mandatory “part of the deal” of buying GMO seeds from companies like Monsanto. Roundup has been patented since the seventies.

GMO seeds are also patented, and farmers using GMO seeds enter a legal contract with Monsanto, which forces them to only use Roundup pesticide. Basically, farmers using GMO seeds enter a “legal trap” of sorts, being forced to both buy new (patented) seeds from Monsanto each year with every new harvest, and also to buy Roundup, a very toxic[6] glyphosate.

Speaking of toxicity, biotech giant Monsanto was sued[7] back in 2018 and forced to pay $289 million to a person (a school groundskeeper) who got terminal cancer due to using their popular weed killer Roundup. It’s interesting to note that a few years ago (in 2012), Gilles-Eric Seralini, a molecular biologist, performed a study for France’s University of Caen, which revealed that Roundup contains a proprietary ingredient, polyethoxylated tallowamine respectively, that  was more deadly to human placental, embryonic and umbilical cord cells than glyphosate itself. This specific inert ingredient in Monsanto’s weed killer amplified the overall toxicity of Roundup, yet the company still refuses to reveal the exact composition of Roundup, except from glyphosate, citing copyright issues/proprietary technology and things of that nature.

According to the Seralini study, the so called inert ingredients in Roundup were hugely toxic for the human body even at concentrations 100,000 times more dilute compared to products available on shelves. However, Seralini’s study was surrounded by controversy at the time, and the scientific publication that published the results retracted the findings after being pressured by the biotech lobby. The issue was claimed to be the fact that Seralini used too few rats to produce statistically coherent data, or something along these lines.

The problem with Seralini’s study was that his research linked cancerous tumor growth in rats fed with GMO foods for a period of 2 years.

Since GMOs are basically newly created life forms, biotech companies were able to obtain patents, which permit them to fully control the distribution of GMO seeds. Thus, the respective companies are now suing farmers whose crops have been contaminated with GMOs unintentionally, by pollen drifting from nearby fields.

Yet, there’s no scientific evidence that GMOs currently available on the market offer better draught tolerance, increased yield, enhanced nutrition value or any other benefit for the consumer, despite using the latest technologies from the biotech industries,. Moreover, lacking any serious evidence, and by evidence we refer to an independent and credible long term feeding study, GMO food safety is basically unknown.

On 25 November 2015, the High Court of Paris indicted Marc Fellous, former chairman of France’s Biomolecular Engineering Commission, for “forgery” and “the use of forgery”, in a libel trial that he lost to Prof Gilles-Eric Séralini. The Biomolecular Engineering Commission has authorised many GM crops for consumption.

The fact that GMO labeling is not enforced in the United States (or Canada by that matter) doesn’t help much with biotech companies’ credibility, despite the fact that the European Union, Japan and Australia require by law for genetically modified foods to be labeled.

And if you want to learn how the American public started consuming GMO foods 25 years ago, you must learn about the notion of “substantial equivalence”. To make a long story short, the FDA, the agency responsible for food safety in the US, certified GMO use in the US with zero prior testing.

Sounds incredible, right? Well, here’s how it went: President Bush signed an executive order in 1992, called the Doctrine of Substantial Equivalence.

This happened after he held a private meeting with the head of the Monsanto Corporation in St Louis Missouri. Monsanto at that time was the leading chemicals maker in the US (now it has been bought by Bayer, a German biotech corporation). Monsanto is famous for creating something called Agent Orange, a deadly toxin that was sprayed without restriction over the jungles of Vietnam during the war in the sixties, and created grotesque deformities in children that were born to mothers that had been exposed to Agent Orange, as well as the American soldiers that handled the substance. Well, that was Monsanto then.

Monsanto also brought the world dioxin, one of the most deadly toxic chemicals known to man. They lied about the effects of Agent Orange, they lied (in courts) about the effects of dioxin, they lied about the effects of PCBs, and they are lying today about the dangers of their GMO seeds, and the chemical that they use selectively, Roundup respectively, one of the most dangerous herbicides ever created.

In 1992, Monsanto and President Bush sat down in the White House and Monsanto convinced the president to make an exec-order, on the argument that this new field of bio technology (they used that nomenclature instead of genetic manipulation, for PR reasons) was a wonderful growth opportunity for the American economy. Se, we would become the world leader in this new area of science application. But in order for that to take place, we must let private industry have full freedom for its creative potential.

Now, if any of you have studied science or mathematics, and you think about linguistics, the word substantialis not a precise scientific term. It means “more or less”, or roughly equivalent. Well, this is not very precise, especially when we’re dealing with science or human life. The doctrine of substantial equivalence that President Bush signed into exec-order in 1992 mandated that no government agency, not the FDA, nor the USDA, would conduct independent, neutral, scientific long term research on the potential health dangers of exposure to GMO crops, because, by exec-order, it has been decided in the White House that GMO corn, or GMO rice or soy bean was substantially equivalent to ordinary rice or corn or soy beans. So why bother?

Just let it out into the public. And that began in 1994. The American population, their own people, became mass guinea pigs in the largest and most dangerous experiment in human history.

In closing, you must learn that at least 80% of all processed foods contain GMO ingredients (soy, corn, canola and cottonseed mostly), and the vast majority of Americans eat genetically modified foods on a daily basis.

What Will You Eat When the SHTF? Neither FEMA Nor Any Other Governmental Agency is Prepared to Take Care of You In the Aftermath of a Major Crisis

Neither FEMA nor any other governmental agency is prepared to take care of you. If you believe that they are, and you are depending on that just take a glance back at any of the recent weather events and think of the chaos during Rita or Katrina .People were affected not just at the storm center of the hurricane but for a hundred or more miles around the perimeter.

Think of the Mayor of Baltimore, speaking about the rioters and looters running wildly through the streets of Baltimore when she said, “It’s a very delicate balancing act, because while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well.”

This confusing statement was broadcast live as the rioters were wantonly destroying and burning businesses, churches, apartment buildings and toppling over police vehicles and taunting police. The mayor was saying ‘give the rioters space to destroy’!

Individuals and families should prepare to be self-reliant in times of personal and widespread tragedy.

In the aftermath of a major crisis, just about anything can happen to your food supply.  This may include unexpected spoilage, theft, or other factors that cause your food supply to go dangerously low or run out.

Stocking up on your favorite foods is something preppers do. It is satisfying to fill your shelves with cans of meat, fruits and veggies that will keep your family fed, happy and healthy when there are no grocery stores to head to when you are hungry. Food is critical to survival. This is why preppers put such a heavy emphasis on storing enough food to last them at least a year. The goal of one year is flexible and some preppers will choose to store enough food for 6 months or several years. It all depends on the person, the available space, the budget and how long you have been prepping for.

Simplified Plan

Okay, suppose you are a family of five. Make out a complete seven-day menu that your family actually likes. Keep in mind that your health is affected by the foods you consume. If you feel your current meal plan needs any adjustment it is a good idea to try any new dishes on your family before stocking up on foods that might be rejected when they are most needed.

Cooking with some food storage ingredients such as dehydrated or freeze dried foods isn’t difficult, but it is a little different than cooking with fresh or canned ingredients. Before you make a major purchase of food for rotating through your food storage, try out different recipes that can help you make home-cooked meals so delicious that your family would never guess they’re from food storage.

Keeping Record

For a week (or two) keep a record of what is eaten, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Be detailed, including exactly how much is consumed, including fresh foods. Yes, this is a bit of work but it can pay large dividends in the long run and could actually save your life.

Sample Only: At the end of that seven day period, you should have a pretty good general idea of intake amounts. Since there are 52 weeks in a year, if your family consumed:

  • 4 cans of tuna
  • 2 gallons of milk
  • a pound of butter
  • a 2 lb. bag of carrots
  • a 16 oz. box of oatmeal
  • 3 pounds of chicken
  • 6 teaspoons of salt.

You get the point; then multiply those numbers by 52.

To last one year, you would need:

  • 208 cans of tuna
  • 104 gallons of milk (the powdered form of course) and water to reconstitute
  • 52 pounds of butter or a variety of fats
  • 52 bags of carrots (they must be dehydrated or canned)
  • 52 boxes of oatmeal
  • 156 lbs. of chicken (or any canned meat)
  • 312 teaspoons salt

This is just the beginning. It can be daunting but if done in a methodical way can be accomplished with good planning and family cooperation. Eg: I make sure to have on hand 105-pint jars of canned chicken breasts and thighs. That number ensures that we can use about 2-pint jars per week.

It makes quick easy salads, chicken gravy or sandwiches. I sometimes use a can of this home canned chicken in Brunswick stew during the cold late autumn days and winter months. There are so many uses for the same product.

After creating this list of foods your family eats, sit down together and tweak the list. This is an important step because depending on the season of the year the list would change. You usually won’t be having hot cocoa in July or lemonade in January.

Tweaking the list as a family has the added benefit of getting teens or even slightly younger kids on board! Their opinions are important in planning for any emergency, disaster, shortage, or adversity. Since you know your family, you will know best how to achieve their cooperation and physical assistance. Be upbeat and make it fun.

Adding steadily to your food storage as your budget allows will set you on the right track to get it done. After you have reached your goal, don’t let this food sit on the shelf as you will lose it. Rotate it, use it and as you use it replace it in “rotation” newest on the back of the shelf.

I usually can chicken, beef or venison meat every three to four months so that I keep our level never lower than an 8-9 months’ supply in rotating storage. Take the time to date each item before storing it away. If you have your food storage on a continual rotation system, you are unlikely to experience spoilage and waste. When there is a sale, check the dates to make sure the store isn’t using a “short sale” (nearly expired date).

If the dates are good then this is a chance to stock up, but only if this item is something in your menu plan or something that your family loves to eat.

NOTE: factoring in some food treats and surprises can help to lighten up tense or stressful times.

We used to keep a detailed list of when we used up a can and when we replaced it. Somehow, that went the way of the dodo bird and is now extinct. But for those longer term (20-30 years), stored out-of-the-way foods, it is essential to keep a close track because they are usually used up more slowly and it can be quite easy to forget to replenish that stock.

Keep in Mind

Store your food in a cool (70° or lower), dry, dark place—like a basement.Use a dehumidifier if needed. Never store anything, especially cans on a cement floor. They will be more prone to rust. There are four factors that contribute to how long your food storage items will last: light, temperature, moisture, and oxygen. The less interaction your food has with these four things, the longer it will last.

Use food-grade plastic containers to store food. If you plan to dehydrate, can, or store your own food, use containers made of ceramic, glass, or stainless steel. Non-food-grade plastic containers can leach chemicals into your food so they are not suitable for using long-term. Use the proper oxygen absorbers in cans and Mylar bags.

There is more to an effective rotation and there are other methods that you may be using that work well for you. The above is just one example and could include more detail but perhaps this small sampling will inspire some thought about where you are with your self-reliant food storage goals. If there is another way to tackle your food storage plan please share it with us. A Few Shelving and Food Rotation Options

Cansolidators: Part of our shelving is ”cansolidators” shown below. They are adjustable and easy to use.

They come unassembled. Connecting the pieces securely take a little muscle but we’ve used them for about ten years, and they are sturdy and continue to serve the purpose of easy rotation. We waited for a sale and got them for 50% off. I think they go on sale twice a year.

They are stackable and can be configured to fit a variety of can sizes and can be used by sitting them onto sturdy shelving or the smaller ones can fit into kitchen cupboards. Using either option makes organization of canned foods more accessible and it’s easier to keep track of your supply as they rotate the older cans first. There are cupboard and pantry versions and their depths are different so make sure you are ordering the right one for your needs.

Yes, these do take up space on your shelves but for me it is much easier and more convenient to be able to go right to the consolidator and reach for the oldest can and see the next can in line roll down the angled shelf, than it is to root through stacked cans on a regular shelf. It all depends on what you want to accomplish: space or rotating accessibility.

One full shelf containing 14 to 16-ounce cans holds 10 cans (see the green peas) and the smaller configured shelf on the left holds 20 cans of tuna sized cans. I’ve never had a problem of sagging or buckling. If anything the weight seems to stabilize the unit.

If you are looking for a large complete rotating system there are several online options but you can also find great DIY options and blueprints giving detailed instructions including material lists. Using creativity, the options are endless and customizable to any space you have available, large or tiny. So if you are handy with wood or metal, get creative!

Food Rotation Systems, sometimes referred to as Can Rotating Shelves or Canned Rotating Racks are available in different sizes. They are designed to easily store and rotate a large number of cans. Many systems are adjustable and can accommodate small soup cans to #10 cans. All rotating systems that I have seen are “first can in, first can out” known as FIFO.

There are free standing options in various sizes but use Caution. If you have climbing children, this freestanding unit could seriously injure a child! There are units made to fit flush against an existing wall. Bolting all units to the studs should be done since these filled units can weight 100’s of pounds.

These units can be pricey but watch out for significant sales throughout the year.

Do-It-Yourself

DIY racks can be customized to your needs completely. This rack below can hold 112 cans plus it has two side panels for smaller tuna cans stacked sideways. For safety, it should be bolted to the studs in the wall. For my money, this appears to be a very space saving, durable option and much less expensive than the commercially available systems where you can easily spend over a thousand dollars!

I just think of how much food storage could be purchased for that money. You can’t eat shelving so if you can do the DIY or have a friend or family member who is handy, for my money that’s a better option.

There are shelves on wheels that slide between your washer and dryer. They are meant to hold laundry supplies but also work well as a food storage cart. Choose a room in your house and look around to discover if there is an area suitable for storage. Think unconventionally. There are under the bed plastic boxes on wheels and since they are fairly shallow all of the contents could be easily viewed when pulled out from the bed.

Sturdy cardboard systems and creativity

While not as durable as heavy plastic, metal or wood systems, these cardboard systems are actually fairly nice because they’re, easy to assemble, inexpensive, and you can add more of them as your needs increase. They aren’t adjustable.

I have a friend whose husband saw these cardboard systems and made several of them out of plywood in a variety of sizes then he created a wall shelf mount. In one area, he secured a vertical row of these that were double sized and mounted them in a small otherwise wasted vertical space between two existing cabinet shelving units.

Be Open To Unique Solutions

In my canning classes, meat preservation is a favorite request and those classes are always well attended. I was surprised at the number of newly married young women who want to learn what they think of as “old-fashioned” skills.

I’m encouraged that this home art is definitely making a comeback. But finding appropriate storage space can be a challenge, especially for apartment dwellers.Making benches out of number ten cans, bricks and plywood with a decorative quilt or blanket on top works quite nicely for those just starting their storage journey.

File Cabinets

We have a friend who found a unique solution. She was fortunate enough to find a couple of large medical file cabinets in perfect condition for $15 each. Each of the five drawers holds 95 pints of canned produce! They are now bolted to the wall for safety.

These are great at keeping out the light; a good plus for long-term storage and glass jars. So keep an eye out at yard sales and estate auctions this summer and you may discover a file cabinet or other unique storage unit.

There are options available on Amazon but be careful to read the reviews. I checked some out but most were not the greatest. The cost was cheap but so was the quality. Flimsy was a word often used in reviews. That said, I didn’t check all of them so you may find one you love and that works for your purposes.

Limited Space

Emergency Essentials suggests that you should not think you have too little space to store food. “Whether you live in a 3-story home or the tiniest apartment in the world, you can find a place for your food storage.”

It may not meet the ideal storage conditions, but it’s better than no storage at all! Check out some of these tips for where you can store your food if you’re tight on space:

  • Under the bed (you can hide your storage with a dust ruffle)
  • Use them to create bookcases/shelving to hold more cans by laying a wooden board across four cans (two on each end) and stacking more cans and boards until your shelf is the size you’d like.
  • Use larger bins, such as Super Pails or totes as end tables or coffee tables. Simply disguise it as furniture by covering them with tablecloths.
  • Stack them behind your couch where there is wasted space between the couch and wall.
  • Fill the dead space in your coat closet. Typically there is quite a bit of vertical space underneath your coats in the closet. It’s a great, accessible place to store your food.

Final Thoughts

Don’t be like I was when first considering food storage, with little knowledge and then just plunging ahead. Taking the time to Plan, Store, Organize and Rotate has made all the difference in having a successful experience and feeling the peace that my family and others have that cushion of food preparedness.

Keeping perspective in a changing society can help us focus on what really matters. When the grocery shelves are empty, whether it is from a snowstorm, trucker’s strike, civil unrest, economic crisis or job loss we still need to eat.

A well-planned food storage system can allow you and your family the time needed to get through a crisis. Not every crisis is of the “end of the world” variety; in fact, most of them are not. So good planning and gradual but steady advancement to your goal of 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or even a year’s worth of food will provide some security and peace of mind for you when you are facing a challenge.

How Well You Can Survive, Amidst Looting, Violence and the Desperation of the Under Prepared or Completely Unprepared?

Whether you’re unsure of how to plan for a bug out situation because you don’t know where you would bug out to, or you simply prefer the idea of battening down the hatches in your current dwelling to weather whatever catastrophe may strike, urban survival and bugging in are two important topics that are quite worthy of consideration.

Most people now live in developed suburban and urban areas rather than out in the countryside, so in the event of an emergency, many people are going to find themselves trying to survive in the concrete jungle.

How well you can survive, amidst looting, violence and the desperation of the under- or completely unprepared, will depend on your own good sense and your ability to prepare ahead of time. Aside from stocking up on basic supplies like food and water, you don’t have to spend a fortune to prepare yourself for urban survival or bugging in, either.

First and foremost, one of the most important things to consider is self-defense for yourself and your loved ones. If an emergency crops up or a disaster strikes, law enforcement will likely be overwhelmed or possibly disbanded entirely, leaving civilians vulnerable to criminals. Those who are clearly well prepared become immediate targets of the unprepared.

To mitigate your risk of being targeted there are some very good things you can do (please note that these are basic guidelines, which can and should be adapted to the specifics of your circumstances and the emergency or disaster that has occurred):

  • Identify local resources ahead of time, including water alternative water sources for if / when the taps run dry. A reliable water source and method of purification is critical not only to basic survival but also to maintaining any semblance of cleanliness and proper hygiene, which is in turn necessary to avoid the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Avoid detection by boarding over the windows, keeping lights off at night (don’t underestimate the pitch black of a night without urban light pollution; your lights will stand out and draw attention to you, so keep them off) and entering or exiting your home from a discreet location or when no one is around.
  • Secure your home or dwelling as well as you can, without being too obvious and drawing attention from the exterior. Additional reinforcement at doors (if not to stop then at least to slow intruders) such as door jammers or barricades, chain locks and additional bolts can all make entries and exits more secure. If it is within your means to do so, you can also use the Russian method of a double door; the front door of an entry point is a heavy, solid metal door with multiple bolts and chain locks, followed by a secondary door of heavy, solid wood with a peep hole or viewing hole, additional chain locks, bolts, etc. If you’ve ever seen a traditional Russian tenement, you know what this looks like.
  • Whenever possible, try to cultivate a closer and more unified community amongst your neighbors ahead of time. If SHTF and you’re prepared but no one else on your street is, you may find yourself having to hide from or deceive the people you live alongside. Alternatively, your needy neighbors may end up targeting you in their desperation. A closer and better-developed community is especially necessary in the event of any long-term survival situation that may arise following a serious collapse or disaster.
  • Maintain an unattractive appearance to your house; while many people may be inclined to erect a veritable fortress around their house, this is more apt to draw attention to your location; a house that looks guarded and well stocked is an attractive target to roaming gangs who will probably outnumber and/or outgun you eventually. By comparison, a house that doesn’t look like much, is overgrown in the yard, and has every appearance of having already been ransacked a time or two, is far less likely to attract attention.

Now, in terms of your food and water, when you’re planning on bugging in you are at something of an advantage. Bugging in has its disadvantages, too, but if you have the room for food storage, you can eat like a proverbial king while bugging in.

Compared to bugging out, when every ounce of weight in your pack matters and canned food is a heavy luxury item, if you’ve got an empty pantry to fill, canned foods offer a great, economical investment in tasty, quality food that will generally last 3 – 5 years or longer. Compare that to an MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) or some astronaut food.

Also, avoid burning your dwelling down; keep a few fire extinguishers stored for use in case of an emergency and practice safe cooking rules when using fire at any time. Lighting fires inside your home or using a grill is not recommended; if you don’t have a fireplace, don’t light fires inside, period. Likewise, don’t leave anything cooking unattended and if you ever try to dispose of trash or yard debris by burning it be extremely careful.

Finally, a well-packed urban survival bag (also sometimes called a get home bag) can be invaluable in case of an emergency that strikes while you’re away from home. Packed with slightly different supplies than a standard bug out bag, an urban survival bag is designed to help you survive an emergency long enough to travel from your current location to your home or to another suitable location you intend to bug out from.

Items commonly packed in an urban survival bag include:

  • A basic emergency first aid kit
  • Fine particle masks (or possibly a gas mask)
  • A window punch (for use escaping from a vehicle or building when glass obstructs you)
  • A crowbar
  • Potentially a small quantity of cash
  • A pair of sturdy shoes (and possibly socks) esp. for women who wear heels regularly
  • Sunglasses, a handkerchief or bandana, and;
  • Some water and/or snacks for the trip home, it might be a long walk

You’ll probably also want a flashlight with spare batteries, a small, portable radio and a thermal blanket and/or warm jacket, depending on the climate you live in. You might want coins for operating a payphone, and if you rely on your cell phone for important numbers then write down those numbers in an address book and toss it in your emergency bag just in case.

For long-term urban survival following a bug in, there are several additional points to take into consideration, but to get into everything here would go beyond the scope of this article.

Suffice to say, for long-term urban survival following a crisis, emergency or other collapse, there would be concerns with trash, vermin and rodents, as well as sanitation, human waste removal, medical care, new food production, guard duties and additional security, and keeping yourself healthy.
